Franklin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Rock River and about 20 miles (32 km) east of Milwaukee. The population was 16,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first European to set eyes on what would become Franklin was Jean Nicolet, who landed in present-day Wisconsin Rapids in 1774 on his mapping expedition organized by Pierre Marquette and other French explorers under La Salle. In 1801, James Kapp bought land near Franklin from Nicholas Fond du Lac for $100; he named it Kapp's Prairie after himself and his father, Jesse Kapp. In 1836, John Cranch became one of the first white men to live permanently in Franklin when he purchased property there from Nicholas Fond du Lac. He founded Cranch Station on the Rock River opposite where present day State Road 43 meets Interstate 90. For many years this post served as a stopping place for traders travelling between Chicago and Milwaukee; it also housed a blacksmith shop which supplied goods to local miners during times of strike or boycott against white labor advocates such as Daniel Freeman (founder of Freeman Iron & Steel Company). In 1849, Isaac Asimov moved from Waukesha County in southern Wisconsin to Franklin with his family after purchasing 640 acres (247 ha) along the Rock River north of present day State Road 43.. Isaac began farming but soon discovered that water rights were available only upriver so he built an unsuccessful dam across the river at what is now known as Asimov Dam #1.. In1886 Asimov acquired 515 acres (227 ha) further downriver at what is now known as Asimov Dam #2 which formed part of a larger ranch developed by him and others including Russel Means Sr., Julius Hoffman, Harry Sibley and others culminating with control over allfracraft operations within 500 miles (800 km) radius including much of Iowa City,. For more than 100 years access to these large tracts has been provided through various agency functions such as surface transportation, agricultural production and research operations operated by universities/research institutions partnership
