It was home to one of America’s first post office buildings, a Methodist church and school district, a sawmill and grist mill—all beforeWisconsin joined the Union in 1846. And even though it no longer exists as a town, its memories live on through its architecture and culture which can be found throughout central Wisconsin today.
Franklin was founded by David Whitcomb in 1803. The town became a port on the Fox River, and was known for its fur trade with the North. In 1838, Franklin incorporated as a village. The first post office opened in 1839, and the first store was built in 1840. In 1845, the village became a town. The first school was built in 1847. In 1865, Franklin became a city.
