The history of the military stationed in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin goes back to 1847. The first fort was built on the current site of the city hall in 1847 by Colonel John Jameson as part of a larger defense system against Indian invasions. The fort was eventually abandoned and used for other purposes until it was rebuilt in 1907 as Fort Atkinson Barracks. In 1941, during World War II, the United States Marine Corps began deploying units to Ft. Atkinson. The first unit arrived in early 1942 and soon afterwards, Ft.
