The fortifications were destroyed during the American Revolution but re-built after the war with new walls and cannons. In 1847, Fort Atkinson became one of five stations along the eastern border of Wisconsin authorized by then President James K. Polk for military purposes only. This authorization gave rise to various names for the outpost including “Fort Knox” due to its importance as a frontier defensepost against Native Americans and “Fort Snelling” because it stood near what is now Minneapolis, Minnesota. After serving as a garrison for several years, Fort Atkinson was abandoned by its original owners in 1867 due to lack of need and neglect by their successors who instead turned it into a public school ground known today as Algonquin Park (now part of downtown Chicago). In 1954, Fort Atkinson was designated a National Monument which continues to serve as an important tourist attraction today despite being overshadowed by other more popular sites such as Soldier Field or Grant Park in Chicagoinside city limits!
