Construction began on July 15, 1837 and completed on October 3rd using local resources and labor unavailable elsewhere due to wars going on at that time including ongoing hostilities between US troops stationed at Ft Dearborn (Minn) and Native Americans occupying Minnesota’s Red River Valley who had raided Canadian settlements there earlier that year
