Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. Fond Du Lac is part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Area and is located on the Fox River near Waukesha County's capital city, Milwaukee. It has been home to a number of famous people including singer Mariah Carey and entrepreneur Donald Trump. Fond Du Lac was first settled by German immigrants in 1836. The area became known as "The Prairie" because it had many open spaces for farming and grazing livestock. Fond Du Lac was incorporated as a town in 1851 and its name comes from the French word "fonds" meaning 'deep water'. The town's location along the Fox River made it an early shipping port for goods brought downriver from Chicago and other southern cities during the Victorian era. Manufacturing also began to grow in Fond Du lac during this time, with several local companies such as John Deere making their mark on local industry. In recent decades, however, downtown Fond du Lac has begun to experience significant revitalization due to its strong cultural presence and educational opportunities available within its boundaries. Several restaurants have opened up in downtown since 2006 (including Karma) which have helped revived business activity throughout the core shopping district; while also drawing attention away from some of older businesses that may be struggling against competition from newer arrivals or gentrification processes around them.
