Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin is a town in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 8,853 at the 2010 census. Fond Du Lac is the largest community in Racine County by land area and third-largest by population. The town formed from parts of two earlier settlements: the first was called "New France" after the French colonists who founded it in 1795; the second was called "Old Illinois" because its founders were from Illinois. It was named for General Jamesbrace Fond du Lac, an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first settlers of Fond Du Lac arrived on horseback from Pennsylvania in 1834. They built a log cabin and raised corn and other crops until 1837 when they started to buy land to build theirown homes. In 1839 they erected a frame courthouse which still stands today. In 1840 they organized as a village and voted to name it Fond du Lac after General Jamesbrace Fond du Lac, their leader during the war. The original post office opened in 1841; it closed in 1959 but has been reopened twice since then as part ofticklingthewisconsinbelt project made possible by a $5 million grant from Governor Scott Walker’s administration In 1865–66 three local businessmen pooled money and bought what is now downtown Fond Du lac for $1 million dollars (about $140 million now). Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located in the eastern most corner of the state. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census and was estimated to be 2,904 by 2016. Fond Du Lac is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Founded on December 12th, 1839 by Pierre A. du Potis and his family, it became an incorporated town on January 3rd of that year. The original name for Fond Du Lac was "Neenah". On October 15th, 1845 a fire destroyed much of downtown and many homes including those of Pierre A. du Potis and his wife Marie-Thérèse Bourgeois (née Leduc). They rebuilt their home at 209 Main Street which still stands today as one of Fond Du Lac's primary tourist attractions. The first post office in Fond Du Lac opened in 1841 with Wm Smedley as its first occupant. In 1861 Jno Haggerty opened a general store on Main Street which continued to be open until 1954 when it closed due to prohibitionism laws passed at that time by the United States government which outlawed drinking alcohol without a license from your local municipality or county! On November 7th, 1889 two brothers named George and Harry Smiths came into Fond Du Lac from Menomonee FallsWisconsin with their father John Smith who had just lost his jobcanning pears for General Mills company in Quincy Illinois because he could not get a liquor license! Their parents were so excited about this new opportunity for them to finally have some quality time away from home where they had spent most of their childhood! They started trading goods with other people in town until they found someone who would give them a trade licence allowing them to sell beer! Then on December 4th1889 they built up what is now known as The Smith Brewery on State Street between Third Avenue east and Sixth Avenue west! When it opened it was one of only three breweries in Wisconsin!. It remains open today as an active brewery catering primarily to tourists who come through during summertime when there are outdoor events taking place at the brewery such as concerts orale football games!. In 1950 two brothers Named William & Glen Doherty came into town from Buffalo New York with their father Joe Doherty originally coming overland via wagons! With Prohibition being repealed and businesses like theirs starting up again there were more opportunities for people like William & Glen Doherty than ever before so they decided to stay put and build what is now known as The Doherty Hotel adjacent to The Smith Brewery!. In 1957 their mother died suddenly leaving them orphans but they persevered through thick AND thin becoming one of America’s leading hoteliers with operations current totaling nearly 1 million square feet occupying eleven sites throughout North America including several locations within Chicago!!!
