The unit was disbanded in 1839, but re-established in 1842 as part of the 6th Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry. In 1865, the Union army captured Fond Du Lac and renamed it Fort Randall after General Samuel J. Randall, its military commander during the American Civil War. The fort continued to be used by the US military until it was closed in 1993. The present day Fort Randall Armory on State Street is also significant for being where local farmer and manufacturer John A. Ladd donated his own land for an armory and arsenal in 1892. The arsenal became one of two main armories within Milwaukee County after World War I when armaments production increased due to increased conflict around the world.
