The USS Milwaukee was the first U.S. warship to visit Fitchburg in 1846 and it is still present in the community today. The USS Milwaukee was originally built as a merchant vessel and served as an escort for merchant vessels traveling between the United States and Europe. In 1898, the US Congress authorized the construction of USS Milwaukee as a commissioned naval vessel to serve in World War I. The ship played an important role in defending America from German submarines while also providing support to other ships on patrol off America’s coast. After World War I, USS Milwaukee decommissioned and was sold for scrapyard conversion into civilian housing units known as “Milwaukee Housing Project” which is currently home to over 1700 people. In 1954, when the United States entered into its second world war, Congress authorized funding for the construction of USS Indianapolis (AF-2). The ship was designed by Naval architects at Philadelphia Naval Shipbuilding Yard and was launched on November 2nd, 1955 with Commander James P Kennedy aboard to dedicate it to local sailors who had died during World War II. As soon as she arrived at her new berth at Pier 1 opposite City Hall, Mayor John Noyes called for a large parade across town followed by speeches from various dignitaries including President Franklin D Roosevelt who presented her with a plaque recognizing her service during that conflict. This event marked one of the most significant moments in American maritime history and helped contribute to building American naval superiority during that war period

Fitchburg is named after General Nicholas Fitch and his family who settled there in 1836. In 1851, John Dickinson formalized a land grant from the United States to Nicholas Fitch which became part of what is now north Milwaukee County. Fitchburg was founded in 1836 by General Nicholas Fitch and his family as a small trading post on the Fox River near present-day Chicago. The town rapidly grew, reaching its peak development around 1840 when it had an estimated population of 100 people. However, by 1850, Fitchburg's population had declined to 30 people due to heavy competition from larger towns such asMilwaukee and Chicago. Despite this decline, however, Fitchburg continued to grow; by 1870 it boasted a population of 350 people and had developed into a major commercial center for easternWisconsin with flour mills, foundries, breweries and other businesses dotting its landscape. However, during the Panic of 1893 few businesses survived the depths of that economic slump while others were destroyed by fire or flood; consequently little remains from earlyFitzburghian days although some notable buildings have been preserved including: The Nicholas FITCH House (now occupied by Northwestern Mutual),The American Legion Post office building (now used as an event space), Masonic Temple (once home to Grand Lodge NoVices)and Baptist church built in 1876 across from Wrigley Field which still stands today (though largely damaged by Hurricane Katrina).
