Fitchburg is a town in the Fox Valley of north-central Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,834 at the 2010 census. Fitchburg is part of the Buffalo, New York Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Fitchburg were French traders and fur buyers who traveled through the area during the early 18th century. In 1786, Captain John Byron founded a trading post on the site of what is now downtown Fitchburg. The post remained operational until 1789 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1836, Fitchburg became capital of Dodge County and later Winnetka County when those counties were created from parts of Milwaukee County. In 1868, rural Wisconsin towns consolidated into one district named for General James K. Polk which included parts of Dodge and Winnetka Counties as well as Fitchburg Township. It was not until 1907 that all but two out of thirteen villages in that district joined together to form a new town called "Fitchburg". That year saw also its first election as Mayor/Councilman with Samuel Jansen being elected first and Hiram Morse second term as Councilman/Mayor (later serving his third term). In 1951, portions of Iron Mountain National Monument were transferred from Milwaukee County to Dodge County and so part of Fitchburgh too came under this jurisdiction with incorporation on April 1st that year followed by an election for officers including Mayor/Councilman etc., which resulted in three men being elected to fill these positions; George Prentice (first), Edwin Aiken (second) and Clyde Sweeny (third).
