Fitchburg experienced heavy manufacturing activity during World War II, with paper production leading to an increase in jobs over time. However, since then, many businesses have closed or moved away from Fitchburg. Nowadays, Fitchburg's economy revolves around agricultural activities such as dairy farming and haymaking; tourism; education; government services such as law enforcement and social assistance; and small business services such as home repair shops, auto body workhops, etc.. FITCHBURG LOCAL HISTORY In 1850, Eliason Bates founded what would become known as Fitchburg after General James Fitch who had fought with distinction during the Mexican-American Warand also served as United States Commissioner to Mexico City under Presidents Polk& Buchanan . In 1851 John Dutton laid out a plat of land that would come to be known as "Fitzburgh". The original name for Fitzburgh may have been inspired by General James Fitches participation at Monterrey where he destroyed any Spanish military supplies that were being transported across America on pack trains! After years of debate it was decided that Fitzburgh would take its name from one of Americas most accomplished military leaders - George Washington himself! At this point capitalizing on its reputation could mean only good things for Fitzburgh...or bad news for everyone else involved! But soon people began arriving so much to call their little town "Fitzburgh" they quickly forgot all about their earlier disagreements! Starting off with just 10 residents (excluding four Indians), things quickly grew more prosperous here than they did back at "Duttonville"...or so they thought! However although things were going good until 1865 when a disease swept through their community causing mass death & destruction there wasn't much anyone could do about it but sit tight & watch... until…the war happened!!! With no way to evacuate like most people did eastward toward Ohio or westward towards Canada these menfolk went straight into battle against some pretty tough odds leaving behind everything they owned including all their families!! In 1865 local men JnoDon Gorman (a blacksmith)with his sons Eldredge(10yrs old)and George(8yrs old)band together formed a company called The Green Bay Regimentcame up from nowhere & volunteered themselves t0 fight For Our Country ! They were not alone however other towns throughout Wisconsin followed suit enlisting in various regiments over the next few years enlisting men from all walks of life coming togetherto help our country fight another war while we still could !! As time passed more companies arrived & eventually Boston militia joined forces w/The Green Bay Regiment t0 help us gain some respect back East!!!! By 1870 there must have been over 100 companies active w/the army stationed here giving rise t o what is now know as WI Army National Guard unit number 4!!!!! Just prior t0 this event large numbers of soldiers barracks were built right next door US Military Academy making #4 one ofWI’s largest towns ever!! In 1896 when natl guard unit #4 disbanded due 2 lack Of funding Mobile area troops took command again administrated by Maj Gen Michal Rozmarski Became 1st SergeantMajor witnthis Unit

Fitchburg is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River near the city of Milwaukee. The population was 24,632 at the 2010 census. Fitchburg is one of twelve towns in Racine County and one of two municipalities in Racine County with a population over 25,000. The first permanent settler in what is now Fitchburg was Nicholas Flattery, who arrived in 1792 as part of a party led by George Washington. Flattery named his land "Fitchburgh" after Captain John Fitch of the British navy's whaling fleet which had visited his area earlier that year. The first post office was established in 1827 and became known as "Fitzgerald". In 1836, Isaac Nevin settled here and built a tavern called North Side Inn which he operated until 1840 when he sold it to Elisha Ketcham for $2,500. In 1851, Wm. Jethro Gibbs bought Ketcham's inn for $4,000 and renamed it Fitzgerald House Hotel/Gibbs House Museum which still stands today on Main Street east of downtown Fitchburg. At this time Fitzgeralds were among the most important businesses in town and played an important role in early Wisconsin history both as merchants and political leaders In 1854 Chauncey Gardner moved from Massachusetts to start farmsteading here with his family and began to name their lands after Hillsborough County places they had passed through while traveling: Gardner Creek (now owned by Appleton), Spring Hill (now owned by Madison), Herveytown (now owns by Racine), White Cloud (now owns by Milwaukee). He laid out a road running east-west through town named after himself including Old Route 66 where Interstate 94 now ends A store opened at 5th St & State Ave N on July 1st 1860 serving all points along old route 66 from Milwaukee to Green Bay On December 15th 1870 Drury married Amelia Ransom at North Side Inn & they started living there with their children until Drury’s death 3 years later on May 10th 1872 . On December 13th 1880 Mrs Amelia Ransom gave birth to their only child Augustus Davenport Gibbs Jr who would become Governor of Wisconsin twice In 1865 Joseph Muhlenberg purchased some adjoining land from Chauncey Gardner & began erecting buildings that would eventually become Muhlenberg College In 1902 Lillian Guggenheim donated her home at 210 East Grand Avenue for use as an archives building for Muhlenberg College but it never got completed due to financial difficulties In 1936 WJW Radio Incorporated moved into its current facility on Main Street north side of town Today Fitzgerald University occupies much of this property future plans include opening up space inside the building so that students can walk around freely
