Fitchburg, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Racine County seat and part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Fitchburg was settled by German immigrants in 1836. The town was named for Fitchburg, Virginia, where early settlers had been based during the fur-trade era. In 1846, Fitchburg became the terminus of a wagon road from Chicago to Milwaukee and it retains that name to this day. Today, Fitchburg is home to a variety of businesses including two banks (First National Bank and Waukesha First Community Bank) as well as several restaurants and grocery stores including Wegmans Supermarket and Kroger Market Place. After several years of hard work, Townshend’s Canal project made it possible for goods transported by water to be delivered to residents more efficiently. In 1851, the town plat was amended to add a new section called “The rolling hills” which housed a large number of farmsteads belonging to local farmers. This section would play an important role in later development as it provided ample land for farming and allowed for easy access to markets outside of town. By 1870, whenWisconsin joined the Union, Fitchburg had become one of Wisconsin’s most thriving cities with over 10 thousand residents! During World War II, much effort went into creating munitions factories in nearby Janesville which helped increase production within town limits by 50%. However, during the war there were also negative effects on local businesses including shortages in food and other essential items caused by rationing. Despite these challenges, following World War II Fitchburg continued to grow rapidly with population reaching 25 thousand by 1970! Today, Fitchburg is home to some of Wisconsin’s largest corporations including United Airlines (founded in 1945), PepsiCo (founder 1957), and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., Inc., which has its headquarters located within walking distance of all major downtown areas!
