Eau Claire, Wisconsin is a town in Dixon County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area. The unincorporated community of La Crosse is located within Eau Claire. The first permanent settler in what would become Eau Claire was James Fenton in 1836. A post office called "Eau Claire" was established in 1847 and remained in operation until 1865. The town was named after John Eaux (1785-1860), an American fur trader who lived near modern day La Crosse, Wisconsin. The first school in the town was built on Kinderhook Road on October 15th, 1855 by Luther Hickey and dedicated to the memory of his late father General Nathaniel Hickey who fought with distinction during the Mexican–American War and also served as a trustee for the Town of Eau Claire. In 1860, construction began on the present schools building which still stands today and has been used for multiple purposes including housing, government buildings, businesses and more recently as a movie theater. One of America's youngest mayors when he took office in 1971 was Harry Sargent who became only the second person ever to hold that position while living outside of Washington D.C., after Daniel Patrick Moynihan from New York City. In 1984 Friends World Committee raised money for local malnutrition research through their "Send What You Can Give" campaign which resulted in 20 freezers being delivered directly to starving children across India through UNICEF’s world food program - helping 700 000 children achieve safe access to essential nutrients for healthy growth over five years! Goodwin became a captain in the Coast Guard and later served as the Superintendent of Supply for New York City. In 1966, Captain John F. Macready gave a gift to Governor Nelson Rockefeller in commemoration of their time together during World War II. The Coast Guard has continued to give gifts throughout its history, most notably in 2002 when Captain James L.Ziegler presented a gift to Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani in honor of their mutual interest in maritime safety and security.
