The first large-scale production of small batches began in 1925 with the opening of the first grocery store in De Pere, which became an important center for small batch coffee. In 1952, a brewery opened in De Pere and soon started producing smallbatch coffee. By the early 1990s, local cafes started to serve small batches as well. In 1993, a new café called Elm Street Coffee opened and quickly became known for its high quality smallbatch coffee. In 2001, another cafe called Dutch Bros Coffee opened and quickly gained notoriety for their expertly roasted beans. Today, there are several hundred local cafes that offer small batch coffee from around the world.

De Pere is a town in central Wisconsin, about 25 miles northwest of Madison. The population was 2,847 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Racine County. The name De Pere comes from French meaning "the place where the poplars grow." The first permanent settler in De Pere was Levi Coffin, who arrived in 1836. His heirs sold much of their land to create what is now De Pere Township. The first school in De Pere was built on a farm that still stands today and serves as the town's primary educational institution, as well as being home to most of its businesses and services. In 1881, the township became part of Racine County and incorporated as a village. The Village of De Pere played an important role during Wisconsin's early years when it served as both government center for Racine County and also acted as a major transportation hub connecting rural areas with downtown Milwaukee and other cities across the state. The town declined during World War I and II due to problems with railroad trackage and loss of jobs in manufacturing. It regained some prominence during the late 1960s and early 1970s as an educational and cultural center.
