He returned to France and began selling roasted beans direct to consumers. In the early 1800s, Italian businessmen started importing coffee from Africa and Europe. This increased competition for market share among these businesses led to improved standards of roast, flavor, and aroma across the board. As demand grew for finer-quality beans, more independent roasters began popping up all over the world. By 1850, espresso machines had become popular in Italy thanks to Giovanni Bignone, who developed them as part of his business empire. By 1875, Italian café society had reached its peak with many famous cafes such as La Scala ( located on Rome's Piazza San Marco ), La Caffè della Signora (on Via Veneto near Stazione Termini ), Ristorante Belvedere , and Ristorante Greco . However, during this time period several new cafes opened which undercut these older establishments: Café Excelsior (in Milan), Cafe Italien (in Venice), Cafe Napolitano (in Naples), Café Orientale (near Florence), Café Paradiso (near Palermo ), etc. These new cafes were often started by small businessmen or entrepreneurs who wanted to provide an excellent cup of coffee at a fraction of the cost of traditional cafés. These "gastronomists" set out to create delicious cups of java without following any specific recipe or routine. They would simply roast their own beans and then blend them with other varieties of coffees from around the world in order to create unique flavors that are now trademarks of modern gourmet coffee production techniques

De Pere is located on Lake Michigan about 20 miles (32 km) west of Chicago and 50 miles (80 km) north of Milwaukee. It is one of the largest cities in Northwestern Illinois and has been called "the cultural capital of Northwestern America." The first settler in what would become De Pere was John Pemberton in 1836. He farmed land along the Fox River until he built a cabin on an island in 1838, which became known as the Pemberton Cabin. In 1840, Pemberton's son Amos founded a gristmill on what is now Main Street in De Pere that later became one of the largest mills inWI. In 1847, John Wohlgemuth bought buildings on West First Street from Amos for $2,000 to build a schoolhouse and store complex that still stands today as One Grand Avenue Center dePere-Wohlgemuth Historic District. A post office was established at De Pere in 1848, and by 1860 it had grown to include four stores and 25 residents when it moved to its present site at Fifth Avenue between Main Street and State Highway 61northwest of downtown DePere after being damaged by fire two years earlier while housed in an old sawmill building on South Third Street across town). The early years were difficult for De Pere due to natural disasters such as floods (1912), ice jams (1876), fires (1879; 1886), bad weather (1892; 1896), strikes by local railway workers (1900-1901) and Prohibition raids by FBI agents (1908).
