Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Milwaukee County. The population was 34,898 at the 2010 census, making it the 8th-most populous municipality in Milwaukee County. Chippewa Falls is located on the Fox River about 25 miles (40 km) north of downtown Milwaukee and about 30 miles (48 km) west of Green Bay. The first human beings to live in what is now Chippewa Falls were Sauk people who arrived there around 1795 from Illinois. The Sauk called this area "Mikahwaha" meaning "place where all things grow." They built wigwams here until around 1824, when they left for their new home on the prairies near Prairie du Chien. A group of Menominee Indians also settled in this area beginning in 1825, but they left after only a few years because they found land closer to Green Bay easier to cultivate than where they had been living before. In 1830, Englishman John Stephenson Purchased 2,500 acres (10 km2) of land along the Fox River east of present day Chippewa Falls from Susquehanna Indian leader La Salle Barlow for $20 per acre ($640 per kilometer). He named his purchase Stephenson's Trace after Englishman John Stephenson who had explored that part of North America previous year with his exploring party including Drury himself! This began what would be known as Wisconsin's agricultural history as large tracts of farmland were bought and developed by early farmers primarily through treaty or purchase agreements with Native American leaders.
