Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin is a small town located in the southwestern corner of the state ofWisconsin, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Milwaukee. The population was 11,428 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Racine-Kenosha Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by pioneers in 1847 and named for Chippewa River which flows through it. The falls were first discovered in 1855 by two brothers who were exploring a new route to the Pacific Northwest and discovered a large stream running down from a mountain to the river below. The falls became known as Deer Falls after settlers found deer browsing on the fallen logs near them. A post office was established at Chippewa Falls in 1857, but no mail reached it because there was no road from Milwaukee to that point. In 1861, construction began on what would become Milwaukee Avenue which connected Chicago with Racine via Storrs and Kenosha. The first store opened in Chippewa Falls in 1865 and more stores followed soon after. Main Street ran through downtown until it was replaced by 1st Street north of town during World War II because main street had been built too close to railroad tracks. The post office closed on May 3, 1965 due to low postal rates; however, local residents continued to send their parcels using wagons pulled by horses until 1974 when an express box service arrived that made UPS possible for local delivery In 1969, Chippewa Falls voters passed an ordinance allowing women to vote without prior husband's consent; this amendment helped bring women into full participation in American life. In 1978, water issues caused several businesses including a grocery store and restaurant along Main Street closure; however, these closures did not have any lasting negative effects on the town as most businesses reopened within 6 months or less once proper maintenance procedures were put into place After years of discussion and research chaired by then-Mayor John Sorenson (later UAW president), plans for what would become Chippewa Dam were finalized in 1984 Construction began on the dam which would eventually hold back Lake Michigan while providing power for city growth over time On July 15th 1991 lightning struck one side of the dam causing significant damage which delayed repairs until fall 1992 . Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin is a small town in the town of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin on the east side of the River Raisin. The population was 624 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Stout–Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Chippewa Falls were French fur traders in 1763. They named it after the rapids near present-day Chippewa Rapids, Minnesota. The first English settlement was built by John Richardson in 1833, and it became known as Richardson's Station until 1850 when it changed its name to Chippewa Falls to avoid confusion with nearby Iron Range settlements. In 1836, President Martin Van Buren appointed J. H. Sibley as District Surveyor for this area and he surveyed a road from Milwaukee to Racine which intersected Indian Road at present-day Chippewa Falls. Sibley named the river Raisin after his friend and business partner, Captain David Rice (1786-1868). In 1847, Wirt Hargrave bought land along Indian Road from Captain Rice and began developing it into a village called Chippewa Falls which grew rapidly thanks to his lumber business and lime production enterprises. By 1870, there were 400 residents living in Chippewa Falls with 12 stores and 60 homes; construction of schools began that year and additions continued through most of the 19th century while white settlers gradually replaced Native American occupants throughout much of central Wisconsin westward from Superior County until well into this century During World War I many military personnel barracks were constructed within walking distance or less of downtown chipping falls; these barracks included officers’ messes for enlisted men as well as their families cookhouses where they could prepare meals during long tours overseas In 1923 local businessman Harry Kapp started an ice cream parlor called "Kapp's Dairy" on Main Street which quickly became one of Wisconess leading tourist attractions drawing visitors from all over Wisconsin including Chicagoites who frequented Kinnear's Drug Store next door where ice cream was also sold . Ice cream sales increased so much that Kapp decided to open a second store - "Kapps Candy Shop" - under new management in 1927 inside an old sawmill acrossriver from his original store .
