Cedarburg, Wisconsin has a long and proud military history. The community was founded in 1854 by Isaac Sibley and his family as a farmstead on the east side of what is now Cedarburg Township. In 1868, the township was organized into first Cedarburg County, then Cedarburg Township 2nd Division number 9. It wasn’t until 1903 that the town became an independent municipality under the name of Cedarburg. The early settlers in Cedarburg were farmers who raised corn, soybeans, wheat, and chickens. The first post office in the town was established in 1850 and served for only six months before being closed due to lack of subscribers. However, postmaster John King Jr. kept open the mail box until 1860 because he knew how important it was for local residents to be able to receive their mail from far away. In 1863, when Union troops arrived at Cedarburg during the American Civil War, many of its citizens volunteered to fight against their own countrymen. Many men from Cedarburg enlisted in Company K (2nd Regiment) Seventh Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment under Captain George Stephenson and Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Greenough. The unit fought off Confederate attacks on Fort Donelson on April 12th while also protecting strategic points around nearby Knoxville%. Captain Stephenson and Lieutenant Colonel Greenough were later honored with citations for their actions during this engagement “For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at Knoxville; And other services rendered heretofore or since” (Ulysses S Grant - Personal Statement). It lies on the southern edge of the Driftless Area and is bordered by Menominee to the east, Ashland to the north, and Racine to the west. In 1925, a large tract of land that had been donated by Sidney Sayers was developed into an agricultural community called Maplewood which still exists today as a rural community with its own schools and shopping center. After World War II there were steady declines in farm production throughout much of America due mainly to changing technology but this did not happen in Wisconsin where agriculture has continued to be an important part of society through multiple channels including food production, fuel production, tourism, and other services that provide economic stability for towns like Cedarburg

The first settlers in what is now Cedarburg arrived around 1837 from Ohio and were led by Isaac Chilton. A trading post was built there in 1840 by Captains John Haines and James Fenton, both of whom served with General George Washington during the American Revolution. The town was named after Cedar Creek which flowed through it at that time. In 1845, Cedarburg became the county seat of Brown County when it was split off from Racine County. In 1857, a sawmill and gristmill were built on the creek which eventually came to produce lumber for local homes and businesses as well as products for export to Europe. The mill continued to be operated until 1907 when it went out of business due to a combination of factors such as overcapacity and competition from other mills in this area. The first post office in Cedarburg was established on July 1, 1850, but no mail ever reached it because at that time all mail was delivered by coach across Racine County into Chicago via stagecoach routes). On November 15, 1861, the first train rode through town on its way from Milwaukee to Green Bay stopping just east of present day downtown; passengers disembarked and walked back into town (this occurred before either streetcars or buses). In 1865, a schoolhouse/church building (later known as Elmira Hall) replaced an earlier log cabin used by several families who had gathered around Elmira Creek for religious services during their winter months near where today's Second Street meets Elmira Road (or "Old Town"). This building served as a school until 1971 when it burned down along with most of Old Town during an overnight fire that destroyed many buildings not related to religion including stores and residences (the only one still standing being Elmira Hall). Cedarburg was founded in 1836 by Hiram and Eliza Cedar. The town was named after the Cedar family, who had a farm there before it was incorporated as a village. The Cedarburg post office was established in 1837, and the first store opened in 1840. In 1858, the village became a town. In 1865, Cedarburg voters passed a proposed constitutional amendment that madelderhood an option for men in the town. The amendment was submitted to the state legislature but never ratified because of lack of support from other towns in the area. In 1899, Cedarburg voters passed a second referendum proposing annexation by neighboring Green Bay. The proposal failed to receive enough support from residents within Cedarburg to be implemented.
