Caledonia is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Caledonia was Jean Nicolet in 1769. He named it after his native province of Canada. The town's first post office opened in 1851 and its first mayor was John A. Brownell. In 1892, a group of settlers led by Presbyterian minister J.D. Barr set up a gristmill on the banks of the Kinnickinnic River and began to produce flour for local markets and storage for themselves and their families until 1903 when they built a larger mill on Black Creek which exported its flour all over the Midwest until it closed in 1984 due to financial difficulties; however, some remnants of that mill remain today as an interpretive museum known as The Barr Mill Museum located just east of town on Hwy 61 (). Other notable buildings built during this time include First Methodist Church (1898), Masonic Lodge No 1 (1912), and Highland School (1902). During World War II, Caledonia played an important role in the war effort by providing food for soldiers and supplying goods essential to their morale.
