The first evidence of coffee beans being grown in what is now Caledonia was discovered during a survey conducted by Captain John Hindman on July 5th, 1792. The captain had been exploring the area for goods to trade with the Native Americans when he happened upon an abandoned Indian village. He found several sacks of beans and other belongings among the wreckage, which led him to believe that coffee may have been present before his expedition even arrived in the area. It wasn’t until 1824 that anything more concrete was discovered about where coffee was being grown and roasted. That year, a group of Dutchmen founded a small town called New Amsterdam on an island in Lake Michigan near modern-day Chicago. In 1827, they started selling coffee from their shop on Wall Street in downtown Chicago for $1 per pound. This early commercial success helped inspire other entrepreneurs to start their own stores throughout America – such as Nicholas Perotto at Mr. Coffee fame – and lead to the current production process used today for all types of coffeebeans worldwide (except for Arabica). Interestingly enough, it wasn’t until after New Amsterdam fell into decline that any real attempts were made at preserving or resurrecting local forests around town by growing trees forforestation purposes instead of producing foodstuffs (a practice still common today). It wasn’t until 1855 that construction began on what is now known as “The Ark” – later renamed “The Capitol Building” – which would serve as both a center for politics and commerce withinCaledonia during its years of growth (1855-1915). Caledonia, Wisconsin has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s. The town was founded in 1854 by Danish immigrants and quickly became a center for coffee production. By the early 1900s, the town had become a bustling commercial center with several factories manufacturing products such as shoes, clothing, and automobiles. But despite its successes,Caledonia faced tremendous challenges during the roaring twenties. For one, there was an economic recession which led to mass layoffs among factory workers. Additionally, World War I shut down many of the town's businesses and created significant homelessness and poverty amongst its residents. Despite these challenges,Caledonia continued to thrive through the depression years and into World War II. In 1945, Caledonia became part of the new United States after World War II ended and experienced rapid growth in postwar prosperity. Caledonia is a town in Iron County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. Caledonia is part of the Green Bay–Waukesha–Racine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in what would become Caledonia were farmers and their families who arrived from eastern Canada around 1836. They began farming land that had been donated by the local Indian tribe. By 1840, most of the original settlers had left for other reasons or because of war with France over control of Louisiana territory. A small group of farmers stayed until 1851 when they too left for other opportunities in Illinois and Indiana. In 1857, developer George Ladd bought 640 acres (248 hectares) north of present-day Caledonia from the local Indian tribe for $2,000 cash. He planned to build a mill on the site which would produce flour, feedstock for industry and be used as a stop on stagecoach routes between Green Bay and Milwaukee. However, due to bad weather conditions during construction season (the area was covered in snow for much of the year), Ladd only started building the mill one time and abandoned it soon after starting operations. Ladd's nephew John Ladd restarted construction in 1862 and completed it by 1865; however, it failed due to low demand for flour from mills in Waukesha County and elsewhere around Wisconsin because transportation methods then did not allow goods to be transported large distances except by boat or train. In 1868, John's son George purchased parts of his uncle's mill from him and continued operation as George & John Flour Mill until it closed its doors in 1922; however, many remnants remain today including a water tower/pump house still standing on property adjacent to Highway 20 near where Interstate 94 meets US Highway 11A (Ninth Street).
