The first coffee shop in Burlington was founded in 1906 by the husband and wife team of John and Mildred Grosse. The couple opened their first café, called the Hazelnut House, on Ashland Avenue. In 1911, they moved to Exchange Street and began serving coffee from a small storefront. The business grew rapidly and soon outgrew their original space, occupying an entire block on Exchange Street. In 1915, they relocated to what is now the corner of Washington and State Streets. The Grosse family served until 1919 when John passed away suddenly. Their son continued the business until his death in 1951. After John's death, his widow operated the café until her own death in 1959. It wasn't until 1966 that a new owner took over and continued operations as Burlington Coffee Shop through 1986 when it closed its doors for good.
