Burlington, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 43,818 at the 2010 census, making it the fifteenth largest city in Wisconsin and its second-largest municipality by population after Milwaukee. Burlington is located in southeastern Wisconsin on the Mississippi River and is bordered by Waukesha County to the north, Wausau County to the east, Racine County to the south, and Chippewa County to the west. The first European settlers arrived in this area in 1836 when John Fitch and Joshua Lake both founded a trading post near what is now Burlington. This small community grew rapidly due to its location on an important trade route between Chicago and St. Louis. By 1854, Burlington had reached its present size with over 100 residents and a schoolhouse that served as a depot for goods being transported downriver from those industrial centers along the Fox River Bridgehead. In 1863, Burlington became part of the new state of Minnesota after it was gained from Texas during the American Civil War; but it continued to grow rapidly under local leadership until 1870 when Supervising Agent George Blythe assumed control of Burlington's affairs from Mayor James Auldsbrooks effective date that year. Aldsburgowski retired from public life in 1875 and was succeeded by his son-in-law Leland Stanford who served two terms as mayor before his death in 1904; followed by his widow Helen Ames Hetherington who served one term before her death in 1912; then by her son Burton Hetherington who served two terms before he died suddenly at age 44 in 1916 while serving as mayor pro tempore of Minneapolis—a position he had held since 1912 when he succeeded his mother as mayor of Burlington proper (now known as South Bend). Afterburton's death there ensued an election campaign led by Assistant City Attorney Augustus Crain which resulted in victory for Jno S Magruder over incumbent Harry Leverett with 41% of the vote against 33% for Magruder despite their large popular majorities durings previous elections including all but three years since Aldsburgowski's retirement! Afterburton's death no further mayoral candidates were filed so Magruder became acting mayor pro tempore with rank equal to that of Mayor S Magruder until Mayors' Meetings were convoked on November 8th 1915 following special sessions called for that purpose pursuant to Chapter 569 Laws Of The United States (1915), which provided: "that upon expiration or nonappearance of any unexpired term or periods thereof caused thereby...the Mayor shall have power...to fill such vacancy." On November 9th 1915 magisterial order number 3 dated December 1st 1914 made permanent arrangements for temporary succession provisions should either Aldsburgowski or Hetherington die without children born within three years following their father's death leaving no legitimate male heir apparent (Hetherington did not die intestate)).

The area around present-day Burlington was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi tribe until 1834 when they ceded it to the United States as part of the Treaty of Fort Dearborn. In 1836, General Solomon Hull decided to build a fort on land that would later become Burlington proper. He named it Fort Snelling after Major Jacob Snelling, commander of US forces at Fort Dearborn during that time Some residents wanted Hull's fort built closer to their homes so they organized a petition campaign against its construction which eventually succeeded in getting Hull's replacement, General Tyler Toombs put into charge of construction instead In 1840, Burlington became part of Racine County when Racine County was created from parts of Milwaukee and Waukesha counties In 1847, Burlington voted to secede from Racine County in order to form its own county On January 1st 1848 Vermont Statehood happened with much celebration throughout Wisconsin including Burlington becoming onehalf sectional state with voting rights equal for all citizens regardless race or color
