In 1860–1861, Burlington hosted the Republican National Convention from June 17 to 21 at Racine Park across from what is now Green Bay Municipal Stadium; Abraham Lincoln won all but one state delegate from that convention before being elected president six days later on July 4th in Chicago IL via processional route from his hotel room at McCormick Place—the first Ulysses S Grant election victory in history In 1915–1916, World War I disrupted business as much as it did social life throughout America; however, according to some estimates less than 1% of all Americans served abroad during World War I After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2nd 1945 there were several waves of immigration into the United States including many scientists and engineers who arrived following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor four months prior During this time there also came about a significant change within Burlington because most people lost their jobs due to newly implemented import quotas set by President Truman called "Operation Demobilize"
