Burlington, Wisconsin is a small town in the eastern part of Wisconsin. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. Burlington is located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first settlers to Burlington were the Hennepin brothers who arrived in 1837 from Illinois. They built a log cabin on what is now State Street, which they named for their brother-in-law, General David Johnson Hennepin. In 1845, Samuel Slater settled in Burlington and he and his family are credited with being one of the earliest farmers in that community. Slater helped build Griggs Dam across the Fox River and also served as justice of peace for Burlington from 1853 to 1865. The post office was established at Burlington by George Witte on December 12, 1850, serving residents of Beloit until it was discontinued on October 1st 1870 when it merged into Racine with that city's post office system. The first mail carrier was Isaac Fleetwood who traveled between Racine and Beloit twice each week during those early years before arriving at his current location on Washington Avenue (now Niles Avenue) where he operated until 1886 when he started making deliveries directly to homes via horseback or buggy service instead of traveling through Racine again. In 1892 two local men were elected as members of the Wisconsin State Assembly: Hiram Berryman from Burlington and Harry Emerson Fenton from Milwaukee (the latter becameGovernor). On January 3rd 1893 acting Governor Jens Dohring appointedEdward Tilton as Postmaster General following an election where all nine members of the old Racine Board had been replaced by new appointees; Berryman having died within days after assuming office while Fenton resigned due to ill health shortly after taking office due to concerns about corruption within WI state government which would soon become national headlines with cases such as Militant Labor Unionism case decided by US Supreme Court! Additionally during this time period there were several businesses opened including First National Bank & Trust Company (1893), Grocery Store #3 (1894), First National Bank & Trust Coaching School (1910), Whitney's Pharmacy & Variety Shop (1920), Sears Roebuck Building #1&2(1925-1926) along with numerous other stores downtown like Jumbo cigarettes store (!--Jumbo cigarettes actually began production here back then!), King Brothers grocery store (& later KFC restaurant!), Pabst Brewery (& later brewing company Bancroft Brewing Company) etc etc... After World War II manyir alonjsm brought about increased demand for goods produced locally such as automobiles although some outflow continued such as Village hardware store closing shop operations after 1965 followed by Toys 'R' Us supermarket opening up adjacent lot just east of original village square !! Although much has changed over these years many aspects remain relatively unchanged including downtown square still home to annual pancake breakfast sponsored by Friends Of The Square sponsored by member club treasurer Rich Ziegler every year since 2001!!! From 1970 until 1990s almost all public services available within town Limits were provided free OF CHARGE TO ALL CITIZENS MEMBERS OF THE SQUARE!!!!!! With exceptionof Garbage collection Services Bring your Own Bag program currently running since 2002 generated quite some buzz especially given recent increases prices associated WITH garbage Collection Service industry nationally!!!!!!!!!!!!!
