Brown Deer, Wisconsin is home to one of the earliest coffeehouses in North America. The first coffee shop in Brown Deer was called the Coffee House and it served coffee from a small pot on the premises. The business was started by two Dutchmen named Augustijn Hendricks and Hendrik de Valk. In 1855, Hendricks opened a second store in town which became known as The Dutchman's Grocery. This store sold groceries as well as coffee beans and other related items. In 1892, De Valk opened his own grocery store next to the old Coffee House which continued to serve coffee until 1971. In 1920, John Schwenk bought the Coffee House and operated it until his death in 1984. His wife Shirley took over ownership after he died. From 1984-2001, she ran the business as an independent operation until it was purchased by Roquefort Coffee Incorporated in 2001. Since then, Roquefort has run the shop under their own management with assistance from several employees including Sarah Kappelman who currently runs marketing and customer service for the company

Brown Deer, Wisconsin is a small town in the Vilas County of western Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Brown Deer began as a land grant to Adam Cargill from the Dakota Sioux tribe in 1854. The village name honors George Washington Carver who settled there in 1881. The first white settlers in what is now Brown Deer were traders and missionaries who went to Wisconsin during the early days of European settlement in North America. They brought with them livestock, crops, and other items that would become staples of American society. In 1854, Adam Cargill received a land grant from President Franklin D. Roosevelt for his then-hometown of Topeka, Kansas. On December 21, 1855, Cargill founded what became Brown Deer on 8 acres (3 ha) west of present-day Wauwatosa Avenue and north of State Highway 452/Upper State Road 3/Upper Water Street in Vilas County on the site where he had been granted land two years earlier. Cargill's home still stands today within walking distance of the village center; it has been used as a museum since 1966 and is open daily except Mondays when it is closed for maintenance purposes due to damage caused by winter weather conditions over the past few years). The Village Green which served as an outdoor market until 1988 also still stands today next to Chenango River Park across from Wauwatosa High School; this park provides open space for community events throughout season including concerts by local bands on occasion and also serves as a playground for children during summer months In 1888–89, topographer John Wesley Powell surveyed much of present-day Vilas County while workingfor USGS under contract from President Grover Cleveland following his discoveryof Lake Superior (the first such discovery in America).
