The Wisconsin National Guard has been in operation in Brown Deer, Wisconsin since 1903. The unit was originally called the "Brown Deer Volunteers" and later the "National Guard of Wisconsin." In 1941, the National Guard was reorganized into a regiment and the unit became known as the Regiment of Madison County Guardsmen. In 1951, the Regiment of Madison County Guardsmen was redesignated as the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment. In 1957, the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment was redesignated as Company D, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (BCT) 8th Infantry Division. The company became also known as Brown Deer's Own Troops which is still used by the organization today.
Brown Deer, Wisconsin is a town in the US state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Brown Deer were French traders in 1785. The name "Deer" likely comes from their being numerous and well-camouflaged among the trees near the town's original location on the Racine River. A post office called Brown Deer was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1961. The first settlers of this area were men who had emigrated from New England during the early 1800s. They arrived by boat and walked overland to what is now Brown Deer from where they built log homes and took land grants from local chiefs. In 1837, two brothers named Isaac and Jacob Smith erected a log cabin on a piece of property that later became known as Prairie du Chien (Prayer Hill). That same year, John Harschaki began settler operations at what are now Maple Grove Township and Prairie du Chien Springs Township on his farm near present day North Branch Road and Whitefish Bayou (now Wauwatosa Creek). This early pioneer community soon grew into one of the most important settlements in southeastern Wisconsin due to its good water supply, fertile land, close proximity to other villages, easy access to transportation via wagon trains through Racine County, and strategic location within rifle range of major fur trading posts like Oneida Lake (now Rochester) and Menomonee Falls (now Racine). In 1843-44 settlers James Fenton, Samuel Morse & David Starr built a sawmill along Fox Run south of present day Elmira Road/State Highway 14 about three miles east of present day Brown Deer; this mill continues production today as Kettle Point Saw Mill LLC. Prior to this time there was no means for locals to produce flour or feed themselves outside their homes so farming became an important economic activity within village limits soon after establishment – one example being Anders’ Agricultural Store which operated successfully until 1886 when it burned down due to arson by local farmers upset with high prices charged for goods bought at its store by larger merchants nearby. In 1847-48 white pioneers John Capps & Hiram Griggs established another sawmill just north of Apple Valley along State Highway 10 about six miles east of present day Brown Deer; this mill continued production until 1952 when it closed because OFA No 3 restrictions prohibited new mills from using gas turbines instead Ofa No 2 power plants – thus ending significant manufacturing activity within village limits which left many local residents outsource their agricultural pursuits altogether beginning around 1870 . In 1850-51 James Wirthman & Charles Hake founded a gristmill southwest of present day Greenfield about four miles southeast of present day Brown deer; this mill continued production until 1966 when it stopped making flour because OFA No 4 restrictions stopped mills producing any type energy including steam power thereby terminating significant agricultural production within village limits once again . By 1860 there were already more than 500 people living within village boundaries with only five businesses functioning . By 1870 over 2000 people lived within village boundaries with over 100 businesses operating including 30 farms employing more than fifty workers each across all types agriculture including intensive haying/farming ventures such as that led by George Melling who developed Rice Ridge Farmssteading northwest ofpresentday town beginningaround1875 based upon expanding heavy hay Production typical on large open fields then ; these operations continue today as Rice Ridge Enterprises Inc.. The first school closed in 1861 but reopened under new management in 1865 with four students; it became an academy in 1870 and later became Prairie View A&M University (PVU). The population of Brown Deer peaked at 2,500 during World War II but declined to around 1,000 by 1970 due to high levels of unemployment and crime (due largely to alcoholism), which had plagued the community for many years prior. In 1990-1991 PVU successfully converted its main campus into a research university using state funds; this trend has continued since then as PVU has become one of America's leading research universities with over $1 billion annuallyin research expenditures alone (2010).
