Brown Deer, Wisconsin is a town in the southern half of the state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,911 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Dane County. Brown Deer was founded in 1872 by John W. Lyon as a small community on high ground east of Milwaukee, and it became a city in 1907. The city's first mayor was J.H.L. Menard, who served from 1907 to 1912; he was followed by A.W. Collins until his death in 1916, and Hoke Smith then until 1951 when he also died without having served term as mayor or City Councilmember (the first man to do so). The city has always been an important center for coffee production and trade within its borders; brown beans are roasted here at two roasters—Rochester Coffee Company and Dutch Bros.—and both companies have long been part of the Milwaukee-based National Coffee Association (NCA). In addition to its own retail stores as well as distribution centers throughout Dane County, Brown Deer also serves as headquarters for the NCA's global marketing arm, Allied Coffee Marketing Group (ACMG). Today, Brown Deer continues to be one of the most important coffee towns in America; its reputation for quality coffee remains unrivaled even 25 years after it began producing its own beans! The first European settlers in North America discovered coffee while exploring across the continent during the late 16th century. The name "Brown Deer" comes from the nearby Heckelberg hill and stream. The first post office was established in Brown Deer on November 3, 1847. The community experienced some growth during World War II when many people moved to the area for work in the munitions industry. However, most of the population left after the war ended. In 1966, Brown Deer had its first schoolteacher, Mrs. Dorothy Wadleigh-Kuhnke. Today, Brown Deer is primarily a residential community with a few businesses that operate within its boundaries such as A&J's Pizza and Dairy Queen which are located on South Main Street near High School and Walmart
