Brookfield is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Racine County. The population was 25,869 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in Racine County after Milwaukee. Brookfield is one of the largest cities in Wisconsin, with a total area of 104 square miles (251 square kilometers). The first European to visit what is now Racine County was French explorer Jean Nicolet in 1634. The town of Brookfield was founded by Polish immigrants in 1836 as a result of land grants from John J. In 1860, George Washington Carver arrived in what is now Racine County and began developing crops there on his farm known as "Carver's Corners." Brookfield was founded in 1836 by David Brook and his wife, Sarah. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1853, the town purchased land from the Hennepin County government to form what is now known as the Town of Brookfield. The town continued to grow and by 1860 it had a population of over 200 people. In 1872, the town annexation happened when it joined the Milwaukee Township. During this time, Brooks store became one of the most successful businesses in Brookfield. By 1910, Brooks store was closed but many other businesses continued to thrive including a Woolworth's supermarket which opened in 1954. The city of Milwaukee annexed Brookfield in 1961 which made it an incorporated city with its own police department and building stock. Today, Brookfield is home to several large industrial parks such as Snap-On (now Arista) Company Park and Waukesha County Library System's Center for Learning Park
