Beloit, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 34,856 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Beloit, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located in eastern Milwaukee County and is bordered by Racine to the north, Waukesha to the east, it shares boundaries with Menomonee Falls to the south and west and Freedom Lake to the northwest. Beloit was founded in 1837 as a small community on an island in Menomonee River. The village grew rapidly around 1840 when lumber mills were built there for harvesting pine trees that were grown near Milwaukee on Mount Washington (now owned by Chilton Forest Products). In 1851, Beloit became a town under territorial jurisdiction from Milwaukee County after becoming part of that county's new district following its creation from all of Milwaukee's old land districts. By 1870, much of what now makes up BELOIT had been developed as an agricultural community with several flourmills and tanneries among its enterprises; however manufacturing continued until World War II when many factories closed because of wartime competition from overseas suppliers. Beloit, Wisconsin is a town in Adams County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Eau Claire Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Beloit was John Niles who arrived in 1837. Niles' brother-in-law, Daniel Webster, also came to Beloit and started a tannery there in 1840. In 1851 the Wabash Railroad reached Beloit and began passenger service; it became an important transportation corridor for farmers and businesses in the area. The town got its name from Colonel George Belknap Clark who donated land to make the town center. Beloit's economy changed dramatically during World War II when large numbers of soldiers were drafted into the military here and many factories closed due to wartime production quotas. After the war, much of what had been produced here switched to other places because of high labor costs or lack of demand. However, some jobs that did stay active such as engineering and manufacturing have continued to exist through modern times including those associated with nanotechnology research at Marquette University and local car companies like Ford Motor Company (1948). In recent years Beloit has seen growth as a bedroom community for Milwaukee suburbanites; this growth is primarily due to new housing developments located north of downtown which replaced older homes that are now all gone or are being used for apartments or other uses unrelated to their original purpose. Additionally, another development on State Street near where Interstate 94 crossed over into suburbia has caused increased traffic congestion around downtown which may eventually lead to assessment fees from developers above ground causing further financial problems for the city government
