Beloit is a city in Wisconsin and the county seat of Racine County. It was founded in 1836 by Danish immigrants as a port on the Fox River. The city was named for General John Beloit, who helped survey and purchase land for the town. In 1916, the United States Coast Guard moved its headquarters from Chicago to Beloit.
Beloit, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and is the administrative center for Beloit County. The population was 3,858 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Milwaukee County and is bordered by Racine to the north, Waukesha to the east, Kenosha to the south, and Whitehall to the west. The first European settlers in what would become Beloit arrived in 1836 from Stoughton, Massachusetts. At that time it was part of Shawano County. The village of Beloit was founded in 1839 by Joshua Turner and John Fenton as a trading post on an old trade route between Green Bay and Chicago. In 1846, land grant number 5781 was issued to Nathan Lyon for his farmstead along with other grants totaling . In 1861, following repeal of Missouri Compromise 9 – which had given slavery status to Kansas – Illinoisans Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail moved their business operations from Rockford into Wisconsin Territory where they bought land near present-day Beloit. They organized what would become The National Union Bank (now First National Bank) here in 1865 under a new name: The National Union Trust Company of America (now TD Ameritrade). In 1870–71 local manufacturer Augustus Herrmann built a flour mill on Cook River within sight of present-day downtown Beloit while he developed a line of baking powder products known as Herrmann's baking soda brand names including Hennessey's Powder & Soda Company (1872), McCormick & Co.'s Saltpetre Manufacturing Company (1875), Bakelite Manufacturing Association (1876), Bakelite Workshops Incorporated (1877), American Flour Mills Corporation (1913).. The village had about 100 residents when it ceased operations in 1907 due to prohibitionism among its citizens - one reason being that production costs were too high for prohibitionist efforts at this early date; however similar mills continued operations until Prohibition ended nationally in 1933.Beloit Historical Society pamphlet "A Century Ago" p 8 Beloin also produced cheese starting with milk byproducts collected during cheese making process such as curds and whey drawn from combination cheeses like Cottage Cheese or Gouda types.

In 1886, Commander John Fenton of the United States Coast Guard gifted a life jacket to Commodore George Dewey during their visit to New York City. In 1922, Rear Admiral Chester Nimitz presented Coast Guardsmen with an anchor chain as part of their Christmas present. Admiral Nimitz was then Commandant of the Coast Guard Academy and had served in World War I as Commandant of Destroyer Squadron 5. His decorations included the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC), which he received for his leadership in action at Jutland on April 10, 1915. In 1933, Rear Admiral Charles Wickersham presented Coast Guardsmen with a steel fishing net as a gift for their hard workcatch fisheries patrol activities off Long Island Sound. This was followed by another anchoring chain gift in 1935 from Rear Admiral Herbert Sargent who served as commanding officer of Destroyer Squadron 5 at Newport News Shipbuilding Company during World War II. Finally, in 1938 Lieutenant Commander Harry Waddell presented Coast Guardsmen with two metal sea chests filled with books on navigation and sailing when they attended midshipman training aboard Ulysses S Grant at Naval Station Norfolk. These were only some of many gifts given by individuals or businesses to members of the Coast Guard over time including: radios (1935), watches (1936), moorings anchors (1939), helmets (1945), uniforms (1948-1950). There have been many changesover time within the Coast Guard such as its name being changed to Marine Corpsguard in 1942, becoming part of Department Of Defense in 1950s and eventually being re-gifted back to the National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration as NOAA's coast guard unit in 2007
