When the first settlers arrived in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin in 1848, they discovered beautiful clear waters that allowed for fishing and hunting. The people who lived here started to make their way in the fish business and soon began importing seafood from all over the world. By 1899, Beaver Dam was one of the most important commercial fishing ports in Wisconsin. The industry continued to grow throughout the 20th century, and by 1970, more than 600 fishermen worked at Beaver Dam. At its peak, production amounted to more than two million pounds of seafood a year. However, over time, as fish stocks have dwindled and competition from other countries has increased, the fishing industry has been losing money. In recent years, however, there have been efforts made to revive it; for example, a grant program was established in 2013 that allows local fishermen to purchase permits to catch sea bass and salmon using open-netting techniques. One of the things that makes Beaver Dam such an interesting place is its maritime history. For centuries it has been home to both commercial fisheries and naval vessels used for commerce and warfare. Today you can still see evidence of these activities onshore as well as offshore: a small fort built by Union troops during World War II stands guard near town center; a wharf dating back to 1853 is still in use today; and a number of lighthouse entrances are preserved as interpretive sites. Additionally, many buildings used by members of both professional fleets (such as warships) as well as private vessels remain standing today – some even having been turned into condos!
There are many different types of gifts that can be given to someone who loves marine life. There are also many other options when it comes to Marine Gifts. A few ideas include: -A model boat or submarine -Candy and watercolors from the sea -Tickets for a trip on a cruise ship -Tickets to see a show at a naval base -Beach balls made from plastic or metal fish

The Marine Department of the Smithsonian Institution has a rich history that dates back more than 160 years. The department is home to some of the world’s most renowned marine museums, including the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, which specializes in maritime history and culture. The first museum devoted to marine gifts was founded in 1876 by Rear Admiral John A. Winthrop, who served as Secretary of War under President Ulysses S. Grant. The Winthrop Museum strove to collect and preserve maritime artifacts from throughout America and abroad. In 1935, the Department merged with the Naval Historical Center (NHC) to form the Smithsonian Institution. At its merger, NHC became responsible for all naval museum programs within the Smithsonian Institution – including marine gift history (MGH). MGH today preserves maritime art and objects from throughout history related to oceanography, sailing, seamanship, naval architecture and engineering, shipbuilding and warfare. One of MGH’s earliest responsibilities was collecting specimens for display at the Peabody Museum of Natural History in Baltimore Maryland during what is now known as “the Exhibition Years” between 1892-1895 inclusive. This collection formed oneof MGH’s initial holdings when it opened its doors on October 15th 1865 . From 1895-1920 , MGH operated out an open secretariat located at Government House No 1 on K Street NW in Washington D C while also acquiring items from both major Maritime Museums around America via purchase or donation such as The New York Maritime Library & Archives which housed a notable collection of antiqueShipping containers dating back over 100 years In 1922 , M GH turned over control of its holdings to become part Of The National Gallery Of Art With responsibility for exhibiting Americana along with significant holdings from other Gallery departments such as sculpture/designs etc…From 1959 until 1966 this would be combined with sections being organized adjacent To each other at different locations concurrently forming what is now called THE MARINE GALLERY OF THE SCULPTURE AND DESIGN section where examples obtained through donation or purchases are displayed alongside works created specifically for this space . Finally on January 25th 1971Gallery management transferred all authority remaining within their respective Sections subject onlyto approval by Director thru written notice given not less then fourteen days prior thereto….Today we continue our rich tradition going beyond just exhibitions but increasingly bringing together artists working in various media across disciplines who explore aspects of Marine life Cycle through their own work
