Beaver Dam is located on the Kinnickinnic River and has a population density of . According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. Beaver Dam was established in 1859 by General John Custer as a post office on Big Sioux Creek south of present-day Green Bay. The first settler in Beaver Dam was Amos Langhorne who arrived in 1859 and built a cabin near what is now Main Street. In 1862, Captain James Prentice arrived with his family and erected a log cabin on which he named his settlement Fort Prentice after himself and Captain Nathan Phillips (the pioneer father of American Indian Chief Phillip). In 1865, Judge Samuel Wickersham moved from Chicago with his family to establish an agricultural district that included Beaverdam and later other nearby towns such as Racine, Mequon, Janesville, West Allis, Sheboygan Falls and Fox Point downstream from Lake Michigan including parts now within Milwaukee County and Dane County. By 1870 there were over 100 people living in Beaverdam with about 50% being farmers; most worked on small farms along Big Sioux Creek between Manitowoc Rapids (now White Earth River) upstream from town center and Black Rock neighborhood east of town center. About half the men employed were white Catholics while about one-third were Methodists or Baptists recruited by Revs John Healy Sr., George Kilbourne and others during early Church Period missionary work among local Indians.. A store was built at FtPrentice around 1880 by Jno Fenton who operated it until 1893 when it burned down due to an arson attack by beavers associated with local farmer Wm Gossett who lost many acres of corn crop due to damage caused by them.. A new store was built just north of current day Main Street crossing Kinnickinnic River on what are now Lumber Road (which runs concurrently through downtown) which opened March 3rd 1895 under license from Illinois Commerce Commission..
