In 1955, Beaver Dam became home to Marquette University's School of Science and Technology (now known as Maynooth). The university built its first campus there and has continued to grow ever since. In 1974, Beaver Dam became home to Marquette's law school and now houses two other schools: Health Sciences Park () which provides instruction in health sciences including medicine and surgery; and Lawndale Campus (). There are also several businesses located in Beaverdam: JAB Construction (a large metal fabrication company), Dennison Manufacturing (a plastics producer), First National Bank (), Applebees restaurant (), Home Depot (), Waukesha Electric Cooperative () and United Dairy Workers Local 812 ().

Beaver Dam was first established in 1836 as a log settlement on the south side of the now-defunct Beaver Dam River. In 1846, it became a post station on the Chicago and North Western Railroad. The railroad passing through Beaver Dam made it an important transportation center for settlers moving west to escape Indian raids. By 1870, Beaver Dam had become one of the largest towns in Richland County and had developed into a major agricultural center with fruit orchards and corn cribs. In 1906, Beaver dam was renamed after General J.F. Beal, who had fought in Mexico during the American Civil War and later became head of military intelligence for World War I). Beaver Dam was built on the Menominee River in 1836 by General David Dixon as part of a military campaign to secure the northwestern border of Wisconsin. The dam was completed two years later and became an important center for irrigation farming and industry. In 1902, the United States Congress approved a resolution designating Beaver Dam as a national landmark. The dam has been used for hydroelectric power generation since it was completed, and is now a popular tourist attraction.
