Baraboo, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin that was founded in 1836 by German immigrants. The population was 7,549 at the 2010 census. It is located on the shore of Lake Michigan, about 20 miles (30 km) north of Milwaukee and 40 miles (60 km) south of Chicago. The community formed around a small point on the east shore of Lake Michigan, now known as downtown Baraboo. At first, most settlers were farmers who grew corn and other crops; later they built homes and businesses along Main Street and near the lakefront. In 1969, Baraboo became one of six communities in Racine County to become part of the city of Milwaukee after it was annexed by that city. In 2003, Baraboo voters passed a referendum asking for its own city government with its own mayor and councilors; this proposal was defeated by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett's administration. Today, downtown Baraboo remains an important commercial center for the town as well as being home to several schools including Stonington Elementary School and Baraboo High School which serve students from pre-K through 12th grade.

Baraboo is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the north shore of Lake Michigan about 21 miles (33 km) south of Milwaukee and about 26 miles (41 km) east of Green Bay. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. The first known permanent settler in what is now Baraboo was Nicholas French in 1836. In 1838, John Mellor settled there and named it after his home town of Bariou in France. The first post office in Baraboo was established in 1839, but no deed or other records survive to support this claim. The only evidence comes from an advertisement placed by the Post Office Department for a mail route between Green Bay and Chicago that begins at Racine and ends at Baraboo; it mentions “a handsome village situated on a good stream” called “Baraboo” with “fine houses … neat streets well lighted up with gaslights” which would be nearest to Green Bay then Racine. It also says that postage will be paid for each letter mailed within one mile of either city center - clearly implying that Baraboo had not yet reached its current size when this ad appeared). In 1840, Pierre unnecessarily moved from Canada to Wisconia County because he could not getalong with General David Dixon who ruled over him; Dixon tookPierre's land without compensation so Pierre returned to Canada where he died several years later (1846). In 1843, Amos Richardson moved into what is now Union Township and named it after his brother-in-law Amos de la Halle whom he had met while living near Paris as part of their travels around North America during the early 1840s. On November 1, 1845, Union Township was organized as Kewaunee County according to territorial laws passed following the Mexican American War which assigned American Indians lands west of the Mississippi River including present day Wisconsin territory: alluvial deposits along the southern border formed part of this new county which became effective February 14th,1846 when Mexico ceded its remaining western territories to Great Britain upon formal cessation of hostilities six days prior through Treaty #6 Times Patent No 627 issued March 3rd [1792]. This boundary change townsite provides us our earliest evidence for baraboos presence in modern day WI – approximately three decades before any official documents exist documenting such activity!
