The Coast Guard has been providing emergency service in Baraboo, Wisconsin for over 100 years. The first coast guard station was established in 1892 and the present day Coast Guard Station #1 was built in 1907. During World War II, the Coast Guard helped to evacuate people from Pearl Harbor and operated as a military police force. The Coast Guard also provided humanitarian relief during the Great Lakes water crisis of 2007-2008. In 2012, the Baraboo Volunteer Fire Department began providing rescue services from our fire house located on Elm Street. Today, the Coast Guard provides emergency service throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota with an emphasis on safety and preservation of our coastline. Baraboo is a town in Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area. The name is from the French word "Barre" meaning "bridge", and "boulevard" meaning "street". The first settler in what is now Baraboo was William Krieger in 1836. He named his land after Captain George Barre of the British Royal Navy who had died during a voyage toNorth America that year. Krieger and his wife Nancie settled on the east side of the river near present day Parkersburg. In 1856, John Wirth bought 640 acres (248 hectares) around present-day Baraboo and built an adobe house which he called home for himself and his family. Wirth farmed until 1861 when he sold his land to J.P Ladd for $10,000 cash. Ladd later donated much of his farm acreage to the town of Baraboo for development into a rural community with schools, churches, hospitals, stores and other public services}. In 1865, Jesse Pohl started construction on a mill on village creek southwest of today's business district. This began what would become known as Pohl's Mill Complex which still stands today and provides employment for many people in town today including some who worked inside it during its heyday as one of Wisconsin's largest textile mills]. On December 2nd 1870 Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States after winning an election that saw widespread fraud across American society.] After serving only two years as President due to term limits set by Congress] Abraham Lincoln was succeeded by Andrew Johnson who re-elected on November 3rd 1872 with support from parts of Wisconsin but lost most notably in Illinois where violence continued throughout much of that state following riots over plans by Chicago merchantsimporting goods not authorized by federal law][ On January 5th 1873 James Fenton purchased 10 acres (4 ha) northeast of present day downtown Baraboo from Jnoe Sawyers for $5200 cash]. Fenton land lay just northwest off Highway 12 between South Bend and Milwaukee] After several years farming this parcel he erected a small wood frame house which served as his headquarters until about 1896 when he burned it down due toFFFFF fire] When new lumber yards were opened along US Highway 12 nearpresent day Appleton within walking distanceof Fenton House many residents relocated there including Reverend H Geo Bowman who served as pastor from 1893 until 1923][ On October 25th 1898 Samuel Poindexter purchased 320 acres (128 hectares) south central section from Ayer Dutton & Co[ Ayer Dutton & Co being John browns partners in dealings with railroads] For $6000 they sold him 160 acres (64 hectares) around present day Marathon then leased it back to Poindexter]} Samuel Poindexter established himself as one of Wisconisins leading agriculturalists [] In 1902 he donated 4 homestead tracts totaling 482 square miles (1120 km²), or nearly half Of allitigation surrounding Assumption College now known as UW-Milwaukee[] On May 8th 1901 Poindexter gave an inaugural address at UW-Milwaukee introducing students thereto[] From 1902 through 1916 Poindexter directedAssumption College's Department of Agricultural Science[] In 1916 Tim Horton openedsthe first drive thru fast food restaurant in America - Horton’s Drive thru restaurants have been found throughout continental North America]] By 1925 there were more than 1000Horton’s Drive thru restaurants serving customers throughoutWI]] One million people lived within five miles (8 km)of either campus [including 550 high school students enrolled at UW-Milwaukee], makingUW-MilwaukeeoneofthelargestuniversitiesinnorthAmericaandoneofthethestupledealsinWisconsin history]'
