Baraboo, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Winnebago County. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Fox River in north-central Wisconsin. The name comes from French for "wooden bridge." The first Europeans to explore what is now Baraboo were Dutch traders who arrived in 1634. In 1781, Samuel Johnson, an American Revolutionary War general and Member of Congress from Massachusetts, visiting Winnebago County when he was traveling through southern Wisconsin, noted that "the river here has its course through a long woody Prairie which makes it very good for hunting; but I have not yet seen any real watercourse." He also noted that the area had been settled by people of Algonquian stock and their descendants still lived thereabouts as late as 1851. In 1857, John Fitch built a sawmill on the Fox River near present day Millville counted among his early land holdings along with other tracts acquired in earlier years including parts of Racine and Kenosha counties west of Milwaukee. At this time Baraboo consisted only of modest log buildings and farms surrounding the mill site. By 1870 most residents had moved away to larger towns around Milwaukee or nearby Racine where they could get work in those mills or factories owned by local capitalists such as Fitch or James Hickey Sr..
