Ashwaubenon is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. The Ashwaubenon Historic District is a national historic district that includes 165 contributing buildings and 1 contributing structure from 1851 to 1907. The town of Ashwaubenon was organized in 1854, and the first post office was established in 1855. The town grew rapidly due to the discovery of coal mines in the area and its location on the north side of the Black River between Manitowoc and Green Bay. In 1862, an Act of Congress granted Ashwaubenon city status. In 1907, when Douglas County was merged with Milwaukee County, Ashwaubenon became part of Milwaukee. It has remained an agricultural community since then and has seen several economic expansions including a sharp rise in agriculture after World War II led to more jobs for locals and increased investment by outside groups.
