Appleton, Wis., is a city in the town of Appleton, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 33,827 as of the 2010 census. The city is the principal municipality and county seat for Appleton County. It is located in the Midwestern United States on the eastern edge of the Driftless Zone and on Iron Mountain. Appleton was founded by John Chapman in 1836 as a small cluster of log buildings near what is now downtown Appleton. By 1860, it had grown to become one of Wisconsin's largest cities with a population over 100,000 people. In 1870, Appleton became part of Racine County and lost its municipal status; however, it continued to grow and develop until it became an official city in 1911. At that time, it had over 200 businesses and 1,500 residents. In 1916, during World War I (1914-18), apple trees were cut down at Battle Creek National Military Park (now known as Fort Riley) in Kansas City Heights east of Wichita because American military transportation was not available to take them home for use in Midwest markets where they would have been sold fresh. This event helped shape suburban development patterns throughout Central America following World War I which led to increased shipments from North America into Mexico through Brownsville Indiana via railroads making local agriculture less important
