Appleton, Wisconsin (USA) is a town in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,424 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Upton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Appleton comes from John Appleman who settled there in 1837. The town began as a small community on the east side of the Waukesha River where current-day Appleton Road crossed it. In 1855, a group of settlers led by Ezra Richardson laid out a town on the west side of the river and named it after their father General James Cranch Appleton also known as Jameson or Cartwright. From that time until 1912, when it merged with nearby Racine to form the city of Milwaukee, Appleton was located within Racine's limits but had its own government and school system. On November 12, 1912, however, when Milwaukee annexed all of Waukesha County including Appleton to become its new metropolitan area, appleTON became one municipality within Milwaukee proper
