Allouez is a small town in the town of Kewaunee, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Eau Claire metropolitan area. Allouez has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries and was first settled by French Canadians in 1836. In 1851, it became a U.S. post office under the name of Green Bay. It changed its name to Allouez in 1865 after General James Allouez defeated Tecumseh Sherman's army at the Battle of Black Hawk Hill near present-day Monroe, Wisconsin. The town was platted in 1868 and named for General Allouez's wife Sarah Jane Hegarty (1784-1863). The first white settlers arrived in 1836, when Major John Prentice and his family came from New York City with the express purpose of finding land east ofpresent-day Milwaukee where they could farm indigo trees profitably. They located their settler cabin on what is now First Street South in present-day Allouez and called it "Cabinet." However, before long, other families had moved into this area as well and Cabinet was abandoned within a year or two due to repeated Indian raids which occurred during that time period. In 1840 John Wilkinson established a clearing around what is now Old Fourth Street North between Cedar Creek Road (now Prairie du Chien Drive) and Cedar Creek itself about one mile west of present day First Street South in Allouez; he named it Wilkinson's Grove because he owned all but 4 acres thereof including Cabinet which he left to his son Elijah Wilkinson III who lived there until his death circa 1880s when it passed down to his grandson Elijah II who also resided there until his death circa 1960s when it passed down to his great grandson Alain Wilkinson who currently resides thereabouts In 1851 James Doherty arrived from Ireland with four men/ boys along with three oxen drawn by six horses; they were among the earliest white settlers in this locality although they did not establish themselves permanently until some time later because they were unable to obtain government aid through an Act known as the Land Grant Act which granted them more than 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of Milwaukee specifically for farming purposes only - essentially giving them carte blanche to start any business or build anything they pleased on that land without having to get prior approval from local officials – something that would be especially beneficial since these early pioneers were farmers not forest entrepreneurs like their predecessors many years later . This act helped spur heavy investment into agriculture throughout much northeastern Wisconsin beginning with those initial early settlers . This investment would continue through most if not all subsequent waves of immigrants over ensuing decades as American society gradually began changing overall culminating with World War II when vast amounts more farmland became available thanks largely to America's entrance into that conflict . Today nearly half a century after America entered World War II , much agricultural production still takes place within our borders utilizing various forms such as corn ethanol production etc…. Consequently , today we can say that James Doherty – fatherFigureheadofWisconsin’s nascent Agricultural sector – laid down Significant groundwork for Wisconsin’s current economic growth story
Allouez is a town in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The first settler in Allouez was Abraham Allouez who came from France in 1833. In 1835 he married Rebecca Juhl and they started a family. In 1840 allouez built a cabin on what is now Main Street. They were pioneer farmers and raised corn, beans, potatoes, onions and other vegetables for their own consumption and sale to others in the community. Allouez Intermediate School opened in 1916 as Alloueez Primary School then changed names to White River Valley High School in 1967 when it merged with nearby Racine High School. The high school closed in 1993 but some of its buildings remain used as apartments or office space by the town government today.
