Allouez is a small town in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 997 at the 2000 census. The village of Allouez was incorporated in 1881 and named for General John A. Allouez, an American Civil War general who served as Military Governor of Illinois. The first settler in what is now Allouez was Captain Abraham Morton from Boston, Massachusetts who built a log cabin on the bluff overlooking the current village site in 1837. In 1845 Captain George Halsey founded a sawmill on the river near today's Post Office and Store. By 1870 there were four stores, one hotel, and twenty-one homes in the village plaza with Captains Morton (1837-1879), David Wirth (1839-1907), Isaiah Krause (1842-1912), James Fenton (1846-1920), John Kapp (1848-1924), and Augustus Weiser (died 1865) serving as trustees. In 1881 General John A. Allouez donated land to build a Grange Hall which became home to the town's first high school in 1896 when it moved from its original location on School Street to its present location on Main Street across from First National Bank building after that bank acquired title to part of the property from Captain Abraham Morton's heirs. Allouez is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located in the Driftless Area. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Waukesha–Beloit metropolitan area and is home to the Allouez National Wildlife Refuge. The name Allouez comes from French meaning "place where two rivers meet." The first Europeans to visit Allouez were Pierre Lescaire and Jacques Marquette in 1639. A trading post was established by Pierre Le Moyne in 1701, which served as a stop on the Great Lakes fur trade route. In 1836, John Purdy founded Sun Prairie on his farm east of Allouez; this nucleus of what is now Sun Prairie was followed by other early settlers including George Fox, who arrived around 1847. In 1854, David Starr Jordan built a sawmill and gristmill near present-day Sun Prairie; this mill became Jordanite Paper Co., one ofWisconsin's largest paper companies. The town also developed dairy farming with milk being produced by local farmers until 1971 when it switched to beef production due to rising costs associated with feed grains such as corn and soybeans abroad. In 1978, Allouez merged with neighboring Wausaukee to form an all-county municipality called Green Bay–Waukesha–Beloit (GWB). At that time, GWB included portions of Racine County as well as Iron County and parts of Webster County (now Ozaukee County). UW-Milwaukee had been planning to merge into GWB since 1984 but negotiations stalled over university funds not available for merger until after Walker’s victory in November 2008 campaign for governor; Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers attended a meeting organized by GWB officials during that time frame about Possible Merger Plans & Strategies
Allouez was first settled in 1853 by the Menominee people. The town was named after Anthony Allouez, a man who donated land to the town. In 1871, the town became a part of Green Bay. In 1907, the Wisconsin Legislature changed the name of Green Bay to Milwaukee and all of its towns were renamed accordingly.
