Allouez is a town in Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1847 by French immigrants and named for François Allouez, a member of the Dauphin's Own Hussars regiment who died in action at the Battle of Waterloo. It began to be developed as an agricultural center during the late19th century. In 1910, Allouez became part of the new Racine County. The first post office was established in Allouez in 1847. The current post office was built on Main Street in 1907 and has been open since that date. The name "Allouez" derives from French, meaning "town near a stream." In 1904, Anisette Herzog married Enoch Ziegler Sr., a banker and local landowner who had also originated from France. They moved to town in 1906 and renamed it Herzogstown after their son Anisette Jr., then mayor of Racine from 1912 until his death in 1945. When they sold their property around 1920 they left all traces of their original German-language groceries behind and only kept some items like beer and cheese while selling hardware products such as bicycles and farm tools out of town under different names until World War II when they reverted back to Herr Ziegler & Wife operation which continues today with two daughters living locally (and another daughter working at home). Allouez is a small town in Grant County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. Allouez was founded in 1854 by Jacob and Rebecca Allouez as a trading post on the north side of the Kettle River. In 1870, it was renamed for Elias P. Allouez, father of Representative Samuel P. Allouez from Wisconsin's 1st congressional district. The alluvial deposits that make up much of northeastern Grant County were collected during the last ice age and deposited along the riverbanks near where Allouez now stands. The first settler in what is now Allouez was Lucius Cogan in 1853.
Allouez was founded in 1849 as a small town on the eastern edge of the Wisconsin Territory. It grew rapidly, and by 1875 had become a large city with a population of over 100,000. The city was named after General George Allouez, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as an U.S. Representative from Wisconsin.
