Wheeling is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Logan County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wheeling were French traders and missionaries who arrived in 1719. Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette journeyed through this area in 1805 and reported on the rich coal deposits along the Kanawha River. This led to a flurry of exploration and development in this part of Ohio Country by early American settlers, including George Rogers Clark, who founded Clarksburg on the Kanawha River in 1811. In 1825, Nicholas Frick established an iron works here that became one of America's leading producers of steel products until World War II. The most famous resident of Wheeling was James Krieger Sr., born into a prominent family here in 1830. He became one of West Virginia's largest landowners and built up much of his wealth from land speculation and coal mining operations. After serving as a Democratic Ulysses S Grant delegate to the Twenty-Third Congress (1879–81), he entered politics as an independent Republican candidate for governor of West Virginia in 1890 and won handily. From 1895 through 1911 he served as president pro tempore ( presiding officer) of the United States Senate; during these years he increased federal spending on education reform such as providing free textbooks for schoolchildren and creating a national library system—two initiatives which came to bear fruit during his time as leader of the Republicans in Washington D.C.—a period known as "the Progressive Era." In 1903 Krieger married Alice Roosevelt; they would have two children before she died three years later at age 53 after giving birth to another daughter while living with her husband posthumously within weeks of her mother's death at age 96 following a long illness). In 1912 WV became part OFWV when it merged with VA under President Wilson's Executive Order No 8802 which allowed multiple statehoods within ONE nation! In 1932 Wheeling lost its charter due to growing city growth while William McKinley refused renewal despite pleas from Mayor John Fenton! For many years it has been rumored that McKinley tried but failed to get local officials pardon so he could take office again himself!
