One of the most significant events in Wheeling’s history was the creation of the National Guard in 1907. At that time, Wheeling was a small town with few resources and no means to provide for its own security. The local militia was unable to protect the town against potential threats from outside sources. With the help of United States Congressman John Fitch and General James W. Sykes, Wheeling created a national guard unit made up of volunteers from all across America. The purpose of this unit was two-fold: to provide military training for local farmers and militiamen, as well as to serve as a deterrent against any possible attacks on Wheeling by foreign enemies. The unit grew quickly and soon had a presence throughout West Virginia. By 1912, there were over 100 guardsmen stationed in Wheeling alone. In 1916, the Guardsmen helped suppress an attempted revolution in West Virginia by members of the Ku Klux Klan. This event helped solidify their place in our community and provided invaluable training for future militia efforts. Throughout its history, the National Guard has been an important part of Wheeling’s civic life and economy. Today, it remains an important resource for both public safety and economic development throughout our city.
