Wheeling is a town in Marshall County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 10,611 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The history of Wheeling and its surrounding towns began with the construction of the Western Branch Railroad in 1853. The railroad was built to carry coal from mines in Huntington and Coalmont to market. Wheeling became an important commercial center during the early 1800s, when it was one of the largest cities in Kentucky. In 1872, a fire destroyed most of downtown Wheeling, but new buildings were erected quickly to replace those lost in the fire. In 1895, Wheeling became part of West Virginia after it seceded from Kentucky. The city’s first public school opened in 1905 and its second public school followed two years later. In 1916, Wheeling received its own hospital, which served as both local medical care and a source for supplying Medicine Man Cigarettes to smokers across eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. In 1925, National Recovery Administration (NRA) funds were used to build a shopping mall on Main Street known as “The Mall”; this mall remain open until 2003 when it closed down due to financial problems. During World War II, Wheeling played an important role as an ammunition dump for military forces operating along Interstate 70 outside of Pittsburgh across from Valley Forge Army Base Campsite No-4 (Walking Liberty Site). Additionally, many factories located in downtown Wheeling produced munitions during World War II such as Bethlehem Steel Company facilities at Main Street and North Park Avenue; these plants also produced TNT shells that were dropped by Allied aircraft into occupied Europe during the war. After the war ended, many businesses closed down or moved away from downtown because of changes in technology or competition from other nearby cities such as Dayton and Cincinnati which had experienced more rapid growth following World War II. However some notable companies that remained headquartered in downtown include PPG Industries at 5th & Market Streets NW; AEGON Corporation at 421 North High Street NW; American Electric Power Company (AEP) headquarters building on Washington Boulevard between 2nd and 4th Streets NW; FirstEnergy Corporation Headquarters at 9th & Market Streets NW; Mellon Bank Headquarters at 123 N High St.; Sprague Glass Factory Inc., formerly US Rubber Co., headquarters building on South Capitol Avenue NE between 2nd Ave SW and 3rd Ave SE between Randolph Rd NE and I-70 exit 20B/Interstate 70 exit 20A
