The United States navy has a rich history in Weirton, West Virginia. The first U.S. naval vessel was the USS Constitution, which arrived in 1797 to protect American shipping during the French and Indian War. The USS Constitution served as the flagship of Commodore George Washington’s forces during the Revolutionary War. After the war, America’s fledgling navy grew rapidly with the addition of new vessels such as HMS Guerriere and HMS Constellation. In 1812, USS Constitution again served as America’s flagship when she participated in an expedition against Mexico. In 1815, USS Constitution became a brigantine and served until her retirement in 1865. During her time as a brigantine, USS Constitution earned three awards from her contemporaries for excellence in seamanship and performance on sea trials. She remained active through most of the 19th century before being decommissioned at Newport News Shipbuilding Yard in 1944 and sold for scrapping postwar. The first Naval Station in Weirton was established here in 1847 when Congress authorized the construction of Naval Dockyard No 1 on land donated by Judge James Swayne (1790-1850). This dockyard would become one of America’s most important naval facilities with its ability to build warships of all types including frigates, destroyers, submarines, Landing Craft Infantry (LCI), destroyer escorts (DES), aircraft carriers (CV) and more! The earliest known reference to “Naval Dockyard No1″ can be found on October 12th, 1847 when Capt A F Wynn commanding HMS Vengeance reported that they had anchored off this point while undergoing repairs after their recent engagement with Spanish ships off Cape St Vincent! With this significant development underway within our city limits – we can only imagine how big things must have been back then! During World War II Navy Yards Nos 2 & 3 were built west of downtown Weirton providing shipyards for Destroyer Forces units along with other related activities including Aircraft Carriers Repair Base Camp Douglas & Hangar No 9 also servingthis role during WWII; these facilities are now part of Huntington National Forest . Our city's relationship with our military has continued through many generations since WWII ended until present day where we are proud to support not just one but multiple branches of service working together sustainably within our community!

Weirton is a small town in Mingo County, West Virginia. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Weirton was founded in 1824 by truck drivers who came from Cumberland and Wayne Counties to work on the Erie Canal. The name "Weirton" comes from James Weir, an early settler. The first school in Weirton was built in 1827. In 1865, the first post office opened in Weirton. By 1880, Weirton had a newspaper and two schools. By 1900, the population of Weirton had grown to 581 residents and it had a library and two churches. In 1912, the first oil well was drilled in Mingo County and soon afterwards began production at Weirton on nearby mineral rights owned by PemberTON Oil Company Limited. The townspeople quickly started constructing homes around the drill site; within a few years, they were all complete. In 1925–1926, local businessmen erected a high-rise building known as "The Castle". This tower became one of the most popular tourist destinations in town and is still used today as a business meeting place or restaurant (the current structure replaced an earlier wooden structure). For many years after its erection, "The Castle" served as both our local government building and our focal point for social events such as dances and picnics. In 1958–1959 construction began on what would become our present day courthouse which opened its doors to traffic on November 8th 1959 Weironton has always been an important community for education; starting with our original three-room schoolhouse which served us until 1954 when we moved into our present day frame building which houses both public school students & their parents/guardians! Ourcurrent public school system provides instruction through grades 7-12 along with special needs programs! Ourrich Martin Elementary School located just east of downtown serves student grades PreKindergarten thru 3rd grade while East High School offers 4th through 12th grade instruction! Weriarton's rich history includes some Of course there are also plenty of famous names that have lived here like Neil Armstrong or Captain America !!
Weirton was founded in 1827, and became a town in 1889. The Weirton Manufacturing Company, which produced agricultural implements and other items, was among the first businesses to open in the town. In 1922, Weirton was renamed for General George Washington Weir.
