The United States Navy has been deployed in many different places around the world. Some of these deployments have been in support of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, while others have been more recent efforts such as the 2012 deployment to Mali. The USS George Washington (CVN-73) is one of the oldest ships in the United States Navy and it served in World War II as a destroyer escort. It was then used as a submarine depot ship before being converted into a carrier strike group flagship during the Vietnam War. After its service in Vietnam, it was decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on January 15th, 1978. On September 30th, 1988, it was transferred to the Weirton Shipyard for conversion into a navy deployed gift history vessel. The USS George Washington became operational on October 1st, 1988 and she has since participated in numerous deployments including Operation Noble Eagle which occurred during December 2006 in Afghanistan;Operation Neptune's Spear which occurred between March 2009 - May 2010 in Iraq;and Expeditionary Strike GroupRONZALLA which took place between November 2014 - February 2015 off shore of Qatar. As part of her naval Deployment History program, she has also traveled to Spain where she served as an amphibious assault ship for Land Forces Europe prior to returning home on July 10th, 2016.

Weirton is a town located in Webster County, West Virginia. The population was 12,654 at the 2000 census. The town of Weirton is home to the Weirton Arsenal and other military installations. The name "Weirton" comes from a Shawnee word meaning "the place where the water flows." The first settlers in this area were the Potters and they built their first cabin in 1793. In 1814, Henry Weiser established what is now known as Weirton Arsenal. This armory served as a center for defense during the American Civil War. In 1862, General Robert E Lee encampment was set up here with his army after crossing the Monongahela River into Virginia. Here he met US General Ulysses S Grant who later became president of America. In 1907, Weirton had its own Post Office which lasted until 1954 when it merged with surrounding townships to form Webster County's second largest municipality by population (after Clarksburg). The post office was moved to nearby Minto in 1957 after that township's merger with Webster County also occurred that year. Today, Weirton has many businesses and cultural organizations including an arts center called the Wahooshell Theatre Company and several high school schools including Central High School and Weirton Senior High School which serve students from both central and eastern portions of Webster County as well as parts of West Virginia. There are also numerous small businesses dotting the downtown area giving it a busy feel without ever becoming too much so; one can enjoy walking or biking around without feeling overwhelmed by all of it!
