There is no one answer to this question as the history of the Weirton, West Virginia National Guard can be traced back to 1881. The first national guard unit in Weirton was organized on September 15, 1881 and it was known as Company C of the 2nd Regiment West Virginia Volunteer Militia. The regiment was activated on October 8, 1881 and served until its dissolution on May 4, 1898. The second organization of the Weirton National Guard occurred on November 6, 1918 when Company K of the 2nd Regiment became a part of the National Guard. Unit service ended on January 3, 1919. On July 1, 1951 Companies B-D of the 2nd Regiment were redesignated as Companies A-J with Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion in charge of both companies. In 1976 these two companies were again redesignated as Companies H and I with both units having their own Commanding Officers (COs). In 1984 all three companies were reactivated for a single year under command of Brigadier General Richard J. Miller Jr., who had been named Commander Third Army Reserve Brigade Combat Team from August 1985 to May 1986. On February 3rd 1987 Units A-J were combined into one company under command of Captain James Wachter which lasted until 1991 when it was disbanded due to budgetary reasons. After that time each company operated independently again until 1999 when they were combined again into one company commanded by Captain Rick Stroud which lasted until 2003 when it also dissolved due to budget cuts within the military establishment in America. After almost 100 years there are now only six active units left within the Weirton National Guard including those originally composed of Company H & I which remain headquartered at barracks just east off US Route 50 between Clifton Park and Weirton while other battalion sized outfits exist scattered throughout central West Virginia providing support for homeland defense missions or performing other assignments specific to their regions or stateside needs (See below). This leaves many questions still unanswered about how long these organizations will continue staying afloat given changing manpower needs or even if they’ll ever reach full strength once more since most events/initiatives leading up to their creation have either passed away or ceased altogether such as World War II; Korea; Vietnam; Desert Storm/Iraq; Afghanistan etc… It’s safe to say that there isn’t much left that recalls an earlier era anymore save for a few fond memories shared by those who still serve today like playing American football at nearby High School Stadium during halftime parties followed by patriotic music played before bedtime stories about “The Boys from Bushnell” living in adjacent homes across town while kids outside played tag around 9:00 PM curfew daily…..or even going out for pizza afterwards with friends from work…. Weirton is a town in Boone County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,546 at the 2010 census. The name Weirton comes from the Welsh word for "hill" and "town". Weirton was founded by George Washington in 1780 as a small log cabin on the Allegheny River. It became an important manufacturing center during the 19th century when Weirton developed into one of the most significant woolen textile towns in America. In 1881, Weirton became home to the first ever spinning machine factory in America when Wm. Armstrong & Co erected their machines at what is now known as Third Street and Main Avenue. In 1924, Weirton became one of the original ninety-eight communities granted city status by West Virginia Governor James Kepner. The town has experienced various waves of growth over the years: During World War II it grew rapidly with production of munitions; during and after that time it declined somewhat; but since 2000 it has regained some prominence as a bedroom community for Charleston and other major cities in South Carolina and North Carolina.
Weirton was founded in 1837 by Joshua Weir and his wife Esther. The town was named for General James Weer, who fought in the Battle of Chippewa in 1812. In 1861, Weirton became the seat of Mercer County after it was created from part of West Virginia. The county courthouse and jail were built in 1865; the first public school opened in 1870. In 1902, the name of the town changed to Weirsville after Amos Weir, one of its founders.
