The Marine Corps has a long and proud history in Weirton, West Virginia. The roots of the Marine Corp can be traced back to 1838 when Marines were first organized in Mobile, Alabama. From this humble beginning, the Corps grew and changed over time. Today, the Marine Corp is known throughout the United States as an elite unit that defends our nation’s borders and provides service to its citizens. Weirton was once a small town located on the banks of the Monongahela River. After World War II, Weirton became one of America’s largest Marine Corps garrison cities. In addition to hosting Marine Barracks and training facilities, Weirton also hosted two important presidential inaugurations: John F Kennedy’s inauguration in 1961 and Richard Nixon’s Watergate inauguration in 1974.Today, Marine Barracks are home to 2nd Battalion/9th Marines (Eaglets), 4th Brigade Combat Team/1st Marine Division (Reinforcement) – which is responsible for operations in central West Virginia – as well as Headquarters Company/7th Marines (Lightning). Weirton also has a rich history with regards to gift giving. In 1914, Captain Harry Armstrong donated land for the construction of Camp Armstrong which would become one of America’s most famous military academies. Since then, many local businesses have donated items or services to Camp Armstrong including Jockey Club Race Course, Weirton Municipal Utility District (WMD), Weirton High School football team and more! This year marksthe 50th anniversary ofCamp Armstrong! In 2013, Governor Terry McAuliffe designated Camp Augusta Naval Air Station “Marine Corps Reserve Station Weirton-Augusta AFB” in honor of those who have served here over the years including both active duty Marines and their families! As part of this designation, all UAW members at Augusta Naval Air Station are now eligible for membership in the Marine Corps!
The Marine Corps is a branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the five branches of the military. The Marines are an infantry unit, which traditionally consists of two battalions, each made up of three companies. Each battalion has a sergeant major, company commander, support platoon leader, and four platoons. A marine battalion typically deploys to amphibious assault ships or landing craft to conduct operations ashore as part of multinational forces in theater. In addition to their infantry role, marines also serve as airmen with dive bombers and helicopters. They have seen service in many theaters around the world including Iraq and Afghanistan where they have been involved in combat operations since 2001. As a branch of the military that has battled for more than 200 years it is no surprise that marines have a rich history and culture associated with them. One aspect that makes marines so special is their sense of communityivism which can be seen in their volunteerism program called The Corps’ Resilience Project (CRP). This program provides Marines with training on how to live sustainably while deployments are ongoing. In addition to providing basic life skills such as cooking and gardening for Marines who are stationed overseas, CRA also teaches resilience techniques such as how to deal with stressors during deployments and how to manage finances while deployed. This cadre-wide effort helps Marines build resilience not just when they return home but long after they leave service.

Weirton is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,798 at the 2010 census. Weirton is the home to Monongalia National Forest and Blue Ridge Parkway. The area that would become Weirton was first settled by white Americans in 1784 as part of the Town of Monongahela. The first post office in what would become Weirton opened in 1824. In 1868, the town was named after Captain John Weir, who fought with General William Tecumseh Sherman during the American Civil War. In 1870, a mill on the Kanawha River became operational and began marketing flour and other goods from nearby settlements such as Hazard and Wheeling. By 1875, Weirton had a hotel/motel/grains market place, two churches (the First Baptist Church which was built in 1865 and replaced an earlier building burned down in 1871) and twelve businesses including four mills: one operated by Wm Cook & Bros., another by Gillett Brothers & Co., another by Hargrave Bros., and still another by Clements & Co.. The milliners also produced lace curtains for ladies' hats from local silkworm colonies brought over on shipments of raw silk from China. 2 companies were started up to produce whiskey: Brown-Baker Distilling Company (founded 1876) followed soon afterwards by Pinchot Distilling Company (founded 1886). Coal mining accounts for much of the development of Weirton during its early years; however it did not lead to a strong industrial base until after World War II when heavy manufacturing became common due to advances made in production technology." "Weirton has always been known for its weaving industry with some 200 looms operating today". Weaving Yarn Society International representative Drudy Sieving commented "It's great that we have this facility because it will allow us to show our customers how good our yarn is".
