Weirton, West Virginia is a small town located in Huntington County, West Virginia. The population of Weirton was 5,859 at the 2010 census. Weirton is home to the Weirs Mill and Weirton Dam which are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Weirton also has a post office which was established in 1892. Weirton’s history can be traced back to 1781 when John Weir founded the settlement of Weirs Mill on the Potomac River. In 1814, Captain James Fenton erected a fortification near what is now known as Weirs Mill Road in order to protect his people from Indian attacks. In 1838, Colonel Isaac Nevin donated land for a school and courthouse in Weirton. The first public school opened in 1839. After years of construction and dedication, the current Weirs Mill Bridge was completed in 1865 by local contractor George Aikenbaugh. The mill became an important economic center during the late 19th century due to its production of flour, paper products, lumber and other items used by businesses throughout Huntington County. However, during World War I (1918-1921), the mill operated at only 50% capacity due to damage caused by war munitions explosions; however, it resumed operations shortly after hostilities ceased. In 1948, weirton received city status when it merged with nearby Uniontown into one municipality; however, it reverted back to its original two-seat Municipality form following West Virginia’s creation as an independent state in 1959). The community experienced rapid growth during the early 21st century due largely to its location within easy access to major highways and businesses within minutes’ drive of most residents; however, recent trends indicate that some aspects of WeaverTON’S community life may have begun losing appeal recently because they do not support increased development or suburban sprawl across rural areas like those found elsewhere in Appalachia despite similar prices for quality housing and excellent schools/jobs opportunities outside town limits).
